My First Art Series!

Welcome welcome! This is my first official blog post. My name is Isabella Bullen. Currently, I’m a junior at the Visual and Performing arts Academy at Salem. This year, I'm focusing on spiritual relationships through a series of pieces. I hope that this can inspire you to learn more about my topic and hopefully piques your interest! I chose to explore the topic of spiritual relationships because it is something I’ve been wanting to dive into and learn more about. Not only do I want to educate myself on these types of relationships through my project, but I also want to educate my viewers.

This last year has been challenging for everyone, and I took the time given to explore myself in isolation, and understanding more about spiritualism piqued my interest. I kept looking into it because I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of my interactions with the people in my life.

Given the option to choose a topic to dive into, there was nothing else I could see myself concentrating on for an entire semester more than the idea of spiritual relationships and being linked to the people around us.

For my first piece, I wanted to focus on soul ties. A soul tie is essentially an emotional and spiritual connection between two people where the connection is rooted so deep, you feel that you two will always be linked. Soul ties sometimes referred to as emotional or spiritual cording, are usually seen in an intimate relationship.

I wanted to incorporate specific elements into my final piece to reflect a calm and relaxing environment. Here are some examples of imagery and reasons as to why i chose some elements in my design:

To reflect the change from a "honeymoon" phase to a more serious intimate relationship, I wanted to use intense pinks and purples on top of muted cool colors. The color pink created the feeling of love and passion between the two while the blue tones create a feeling of trust and tranquility. I chose to draw a bundle of strings tying these two people together to signify interconnectivity and all of the things that bind them together.

The reason the two figures don’t have any prominent features is because I want viewers to be able to insert themselves in the place of the characters in my final piece; and hopefully you guys can connect with it in some way. In this series, I'm attempting to move away from realism and explore a more abstract style.

This is the final sketch for my first piece.

I got some inspiration from this artist named Janusz Jurek. Janusz Jurek is a graphic designer from Poland. He works in the marketplace, doing 3D modeling, photography, graphic design, animation, and other innovative types of visual art. His work is described as generative art by him. He employs a technique that combines contemporary technologies with procedural programming, as well as essential parts of traditional drawing. His art influenced me to take a more abstract approach to my sketches.

His works titled Blue Monday II

Given that this is my first blog and my first piece of a series, I'd be grateful if I could receive some suggestions or insight for my other subtopics, which include twin flame, soulmate, and karmic relationships. Also, feel free to share any artists who have an abstract style that is similar!

I find it interesting that your time in isolation led you to explore interactions and connective ties with other people. I love the work you have done so far, its very pretty. One of the things I see making this a inspiring piece is that you left them neutral so that your audience can relate and empathize with the characters you have painted. Was making your series abstract a challenge you are attempting?
