Workin' on the Thesis Pieces

Here is basically some experimentation I have been doing recently with the media to try and get the hang of what ill really be doing for my thesis piece.

I do enjoy the messier look with smudges. However, I did not like working on the wood.

When working with charcoal I feel that you're bound to have smudges and messed up lines no matter how hard you try, so I tried to embrace that.

Currently, I have gathered some of the materials that I am going to be working on, but I am planning on getting the bigger piece Wednesday and really STARTING then.

I grabbed some paper to practice sketch on and just got a feel of the material that was given to me. It was pretty tricky at first to get anything on paper but then I just started drawing shapes and going with the flow of everything happening. I honestly just listened to music and let my feelings out on the paper, and I actually really like what I created.

Since I am planning on doing a portrait of myself I wanted to just practice drawing myself to see how I liked it. I did like working on paper rather than wood because the wood had an unpleasing texture and the charcoal applied smoother to the paper as well.

So as for how I am going to start, I am going to break this project up with school and at home. Since I want to do a triptych I am going to get the larger paper Wednesday and bring it home. As for the two smaller pieces I want to keep those at school. The plan is to basically work on the large-scale piece at home and keep it there for the most part so I won't have to carry it back and forth from school, but for the smaller pieces, I will complete those at school and it will be easier to transport those.

However, even though I have high expectations for myself and it is my first time in a while using charcoal I am excited!
